NYO Canada (National Youth Orchestra of Canada) deeply regrets to announce that its 2020 Orchestra will not be able to travel to Europe for their performances in Germany, Slovenia, and Croatia over concerns of the potential spread of coronavirus.

“The decision was made out of concern for our musicians. We didn’t want anyone exposed to additional risk, either from the virus or from being stranded in a foreign country due to transportation disruptions,” said Kevin Latimer, Board Chair. “We’re obviously disappointed we won’t be performing in Europe this year, but we need to err on the side of caution. We are going forward with the summer training institute as planned and exploring the possibility of adding more concerts to our Canadian tour.”

The Orchestra, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2020, had been scheduled to travel through Venice to play three engagements in Germany, Slovenia, and Croatia in early August. Given the impact of the coronavirus in Northern Italy, we have decided to cancel these concerts in light of the health risks associated with travel in this region, and the unpredictability of the scale of the coronavirus at the time of our concert dates. The Orchestra will still proceed with its summer training institute in Kitchener-Waterloo, as well as a Canadian tour which visits Parry Sound, Stratford, Ottawa, Kingston, Montreal, and Toronto. “We know Canadians and the whole musical community will understand this change and why we had to make it,” said CEO Barbara Smith. “While we hope the situation will improve, we must take into consideration the health and safety of our musicians and staff.”

C’est avec le plus grand regret que l’Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada (NYO Canada) annonce qu’à cause d’inquiétudes quant à la propagation du coronavirus, l’orchestre 2020 ne se rendra pas en Europe pour les concerts prévus en Allemagne, en Slovénie et en Croatie.

L’orchestre poursuivra son institut estival de formation à Kitchener-Waterloo et sa tournée canadienne qui englobe Parry Sound, Stratford, Ottawa, Kingston, Montréal et Toronto.
