Violin – NYO Member: 2016, 2017, 2018 – ON
Yeganeh’s journey with music started in Tehran, Iran when she was first enrolled in Orff classes at the age of four. She began violin lessons a little over a year later, where she quickly fell in love with the prospect of discovering different melodies by ear. Currently based in Toronto, Yeganeh earned a BFA in Music from York University, where she studied under the tutelage of Jacques Israelievitch and Mark Skazinetsky. During her time at York, Yeganeh held various leadership positions with the university’s symphony and chamber orchestras, and had the opportunity to perform as a soloist. In addition to classical music,Yeganeh is an avid contemporary improvisation enthusiast and enjoys playing music with Eastern influences. Yeganeh attributes much of her musical growth to the three summers that she spent with NYO Canada.
Favourite NYO memory
It’s hard to choose one moment in particular, but having the opportunity to perform in front of a full house in the beautiful Konzerthaus Berlin stands out to me. Witnessing the sheer excitement and enthusiasm of the surprisingly young crowd is an insurmountable feeling that I will cherish for a long time.
Advice for new NYO applicants
I would say to prepare to the best of your ability, and go for it! Not only do you get the opportunity to work with incredibly talented musicians, but you also have the privilege of learning from extremely prominent and knowledgeable faculty in a variety of settings throughout the rigorous training portion of the program. The friends you make, the pieces that you get to play, and the places you are able to visit and perform are all going to make for a truly unique and memorable summer experience.
