Bio

Jonathan Elliotson joined the Kingston Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in their 2017-18 season during his final year of the Performance Diploma Program at the Glenn Gould School studying with Andrew McCandless.

Jonathan has a soloist’s upbringing, competing in festivals and youth programs, winning competitions in the Hannaford Youth Band’s “Rising Stars” Solo Competition in 2011 and 2013, and First Place in the Brass Category at the 2012 National Music Festival in Fort MacMurray, Alberta. This resulted in support from the Kingsway Humber Club of the Toronto Kiwanis in the form of two separate scholarships. As soloist, he has performed with the Hannaford Street Silver Band, the Huronia Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan made his Koerner Hall solo debut this year as a Royal Conservatory Orchestra Prelude Concert artist.

While finding satisfaction and joy in playing as a soloist, Jonathan’s passion is in orchestral music. His love of the orchestra has brought him performances both domestic and overseas with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He has been lead under the baton of legendary maestro’s Krzysztof Urbanski, Stéphane Denève, and Bramwell Tovey.

Jonathan Elliotson can be heard on the NYO Album Lisboa playing first trumpet on the Symphony No. 5 by Sergei Prokofiev, and his recording of the Infantry Last Post can be heard on radio broadcast stations nationwide on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, at the eleventh hour.

Favourite NYO memory

My favourite NYO moment this year was standing over top of the grave of J. S. Bach in Leipzig, Germany while listening to his organ being played.

Advice for new NYO applicants

My advice to an NYO first timer would be to make sure that all your music is organized and learned well in advance so that you can enjoy to fun that they are sure to encounter with a clear conscience but also play and make music with the utmost confidence!!
