Faculty Spotlight: David Hetherington
Assistant Principal Cello (Retired), Toronto Symphony Orchestra | NYO Canada Alum: 1967 & 1968
When David Hetherington thinks back to his summers with NYO Canada in 1967 and 1968, he remembers the people just as vividly as the music.
“What I remember most is working with such talented and advanced students who inspired me to raise the level of my playing,” David says. “I particularly enjoyed my string quartet, which had the honour of being coached by David Soyer of the then-recently formed Guarneri Quartet.”
Those summers helped shape not only his artistry but also his entire outlook on music as a lifelong pursuit. “As a member of NYO, I learned that one can work hard and have fun at the same time. I’ve often confessed that I’ve never worked for a living; I have only played!”
After a rich performance career, including winning a Toronto Symphony Orchestra audition while still a university student, David continues to shape young artists as a devoted educator.
“One’s life as a professional musician consists of sharing music with others—your colleagues, your audience, and perhaps most rewarding of all, your students,” he reflects. “As a student, I had inspiring performers as teachers, and I’ve tried to carry on their legacy as best I could.”
Looking ahead to this summer, David is especially excited to dive into the cello part of Mahler’s 5th Symphony with the next generation. “The music of Gustav Mahler is my favourite for its beauty and amazing depth of emotion,” he shares. “It inspires experienced orchestral musicians and young students alike.”
And what advice would he give to young musicians today?
“I received much valuable advice from my teachers and coaches. My only wish is that I might have followed all of it,” he laughs.
To this year’s NYO Canada musicians—and to old friends reading along—David Hetherington sends a message filled with gratitude, humour, and passion for the art form that’s shaped his life. He knows firsthand: the friendships and music you create here will stay with you a lifetime.
