01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I was curious about the trumpet and once I tried it I immediately fell in love - I really could not stop playing. Oddly enough (or maybe not) it was the one instrument my parents told me not to choose.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
Ideally I would enjoy a varied career which allows me to continuously explore all the musical mediums which a versatile instrument such as the trumpet has to offer. I strive towards having the opportunity to perform in symphony orchestras, pit orchestra for the ballet, early music ensembles, you name it!

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
Swing dancing, horseback riding, environmentalism, and anything to do with nature and the outdoors.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
I once wrote a jingle for Sarsaparilla Rootbeer for my first theory assignment during first year?

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
Alison Balsom

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
At the moment I must say Rimsky-Kirsakov's Scheherazade

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Oskar Böhme's Concerto in f minor

09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
Our performance of Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances in Montreal during the 2015 tour stands out to me - something about the energy was just right and I found it to be an electrifying and rewarding experience.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
I think the seeds were planted when I was younger and happened to stumble across the classical radio station. It quickly became my favourite music to listen to. Around age 13 I discovered The Phantom of the Opera, which was, in my mind, the greatest thing ever and that I better be able to play in productions of it when I grew up. Once I began to learn and become serious about my instrument I quickly realized that I simply couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
As a more introverted person I find it difficult I market myself - it is something which I do not enjoy doing and which I tend to dread, but which I know is important when trying to, for example, establish oneself as a freelancer or teacher.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
Because it is an honour to participate if accepted.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
Learning from some of Canada's finest professionals is an incredibly enriching experience, and having the opportunity to learn about recording and going on tour is a crucial aspect in our careers as young professionals. Having the privilege to partake in all of this in an intensive summer program is a wonderful experience which will benefit us as we continue on our journeys as classical musicians.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
I would hopefully be freelancing, working somewhere, maybe traveling and spending as much time as possible outdoors.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
For me, any performance during which I am able to turn off being nervous or worrying is a proud moment.
