01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
After dabbling with percussion and trombone, I picked up the electric bass on a whim. When I got into jazz I wanted to learn the double bass, and eventually ran with it.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
A lot of bass players hope to play for a full-time professional orchestra, and I am no different! Ultimately, I just love performing, so it would be great to be involved in chamber music and other things of the sort too! I also hope to teach in the future.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
I am a huge foodie and can also eat a stupid amount of food. I also really enjoy exercising to make sure that my food lover's belly does not impede my bass belly. In particular, I enjoy lifting weights, and playing a wide variety of sports, like street hockey, basketball, frisbee, and whatever is fun!

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
There are way too many wonderful musicians out there to pick just one. Some current favourites are the Berlin Philharmonic and Edgar Meyer.

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
There are too many! Mahler 9 is still one of them.

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Currently the Andres Martin double bass concerto, which is surprisingly cool for a bass concerto! Out of the conventional pile, I dig Bottesini's second concerto.

09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
Eating my bodyweight in sushi was pretty awesome, but I gotta say the Mahler 9 concert was unreal. I don't think I've ever shared such emotional energy with so many other musicians.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
It was somewhat of a calling with how I picked up the electric bass, then moved onto the double bass! Music has always been a huge part of my life (in different genres) so it seemed only natural to eventually consider it as a career. Also, not only is it challenging, but it involves such a large amount of expression and collaboration.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
The vast amount of competition definitely makes pursuing a career in music very difficult. To be able to differentiate yourself from that competition is extremely challenging.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
Because it's the best orchestral training program in Canada! The amount of experience, as well as how much I get to learn about my instrument and music really helps with artistic development.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
The orchestral experience here is like no other, and to be able to share it with so many other talented colleagues is inspiring! The faculty is also fantastic, and with all of the time spent with the instrument, I certainly learn a lot about it, as well as how I can develop myself as a musician.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
Texas Music Festival, Domaine Forget

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
I'd be doing master classes at Domaine Forget.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
Winning the Section Bass position with the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra!

17. What scholarships, if any, have you been awarded in the past year?/ Quelles bourses, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?
Calgary Pro Musica Dick Matthews' Young Artist Development Program

18. What awards, if any, have you won in the past year?/ Quels prix, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?
RBC Concerto Competition
