01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
Unfortunately “choice” was a scarily abstract, alien concept to my 7-year-old self. One day, my parents decided that I needed a violin for company instead of a cat. Fortunately, I ended up enjoying it (and developed a cat allergy a few years later).
03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
Since I’m currently majoring in pharmacology, I don't have any short-term goals for a career in music as of now. However, I'm very interested in the psychological and cognitive benefits of an early music education. As a research enthusiast, I would definitely explore the field of music education (and hopefully generate enough evidence one day to make music education compulsory, in the same vein as English and mathematics). Of course, I would like to eventually go back to my roots: music! I love performing, analyzing and discovering new pieces. An orchestral audition, a part-time teaching job or a chamber gig are definitely welcome when the moment is opportune.
04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
Literature, film, theatre, history, writing... I'm a very curious person. I just wished I was as athletic.
05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
My integral collaborations have led me to explore the almost-meaningful potential of key-signatures and experiences, and interpret the creation of situations in which the informing of a cluster has the potential to decipher all sorts of operatic tetrachord-novelties. But no, not really. I wish. Sorry you had to read all that.
06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
Anne-Sophie Mutter, because I grew up listening to her Mozart recordings. Her sound is one of my favourite things in the world.
07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
“Favourite” wouldn’t be the correct term, but I have a personal affinity for Brahms’ chamber works.
08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Beethoven for humanity, Brahms for love, Shostakovich No. 1 for chaos and Sibelius for mountains.
09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
Wonderful Christmas gifts (a Long & McQuade reed among others), our Dvorak quintet, the sassiness that could reach incommensurable levels and Ravel’s spasmodic Daphnis and Chloe. Many, many memorable moments, but I have to say that my fondest one is the amazing friends and musicians I was fortunate enough to meet.
10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
I’m going to quote Karl Paulnack, who addressed the question in his welcome address at the Boston Conservatory: “Music has a way of finding the big, invisible moving pieces inside our hearts and souls and helping us figure out the position of things inside us.” Music is a mysterious yet universal language, and I’m determined to understand it to the best of my abilities.
11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
I’m going to tweak this question a little and talk about how I can face challenges that would prevent me from having a career in music, mainly with the help of two attributes: open-mindedness and patience. Being open-minded not only towards new experiences but also towards ourselves is imperative. Perfectionism is the plight of the musician, but we must accept the fact that a bad day of practicing is part of the process, not something to avoid or irrevocable proof that we can’t succeed. And patience, because making music is like planting a tree: we have to water it every day, and we can’t predict with absolute certainty the canopy’s shape; we just have to let it grow. There will be good and rough times, things that we would want to forget, but if we saw all these experiences as lessons that could teach us something, then it would’ve been all worth it.
12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
NYOC 2014 was one of the best summers of my life, and I’m eager to relive the experience from a new perspective and with a pair of (hopefully) wiser eyes.
13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
The opportunity to build on skills both orchestral and personal (essentially a continuation of last year), to travel all across Canada and to play in some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls. All the while surrounded by amazing friends.
14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
Interning in a research lab, working at the hospital, visiting family in China and travelling to Europe.
16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
Performing the entire Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and being happy with how it went (which almost never happens). It was a small audience, but inside I was exuberant. It was a childhood dream come true.
