01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I didn’t choose it because I started when I was 4, but my favourite instrument is the cello, so I like having the mini and portable version. Besides, the amount of sass and energy violinists possess never gave me a chance to abandon the violin.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I’m definitely not pursuing music as a major, but I hope to keep it in my life as a hobby anyways. I am currently looking at health care management or orchestral management as of now, but that may very well change in a few months.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
Photography, cooking, blogging, reading, and skating.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
Anne Sophie Mutter

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Prokofiev Symphony No. 5

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
I end up hating any concerto I polish to perfection and I don’t like concertos unless I play them, so I guess Wieniawski Violin Concerto no. 1 would be a happy medium.

09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
My fondest memories were the nights before Days Off, where we stayed up really late just talking and bonding as friends rather than musicians. Faculty concerts were always eye-opening and made me appreciate and respect the amazing mentors we have so much more. I especially enjoyed the moments at the end of every concert on tour when we toss our bows up for the last chord and the sound resonates through the walls of the hall amplified by the excitement radiating from our youthful smiles.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
I will not be pursuing music as a profession, but I did (and will) keep my instrument on hand because the people it allowed me to meet. Musicians are wild and sensitive creatures, and together, we can make magic happen. I love music and performing, but nowhere near the atmosphere of a musical ensemble.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
Being innovative while retaining the integrity of the original composer.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
It’s a chance for me to strengthen my ties with music because I don’t get many chances to do that. Being surrounded by people who don’t appreciate or understand classical music on a daily basis is frustrating and I needed a change of atmosphere.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
There are so many benefits such as private lessons with stellar coaches, performance opportunity in the best halls in Canada, forming a tight network with budding young musicians, and being infused with classical music every second of the summer.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
I would be in China enjoying a nice long vacation touring the country.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
My proudest moment was when I recorded my own solo CD. Even though it was for university supplement, it was still a huge feat to tackle and I was very proud of the amount of work I dedicated to polishing that hour of music.

17. What scholarships, if any, have you been awarded in the past year?/ Quelles bourses, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?

18. What awards, if any, have you won in the past year?/ Quels prix, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
Did, not any more

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Owl City

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Capricio Italiene

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know? / Y a-t-il quelque chose à votre propos qui est un peu surprenant ou hors de l’ordinaire?
I am, without a doubt, a “health nut”. I am extremely health conscious and knowledgeable about the nutrition values of each food and tips to being fit. I try to be healthy in every aspect of my life, form eating to breathing, to working out. I believe that if I can be healthy in everything I do, then I can use that 30 minutes I might spend on the treadmill to do something else more productive, such as practicing.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out? / Quel conseil donneriez-vous aux jeunes artistes qui viennent de commencer?
Perseverance. Nothing easy is worth having, and nothing worth having is easy to get. Classical music, or just music in general will bring a whole different world and perspective in to your life. Even though it might not sound good in the beginning, your time to shine will come as long as you keep at it.
