How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
When I was 4 my parents gave me a choice between starting either piano lessons or violin lessons. My older brother already played the piano so I chose violin in order to avoid ever being compared with him. I am still very proud of little four-year-old Naomi to this day for that excellent foresight.
What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I am currently studying in the concurrent double degree BMus/BEd program at McGill University which will qualify me as a high school music teacher (just like my dad) 3 years down the road. I will be completing my first teaching placement just before joining the NYOC this spring so at that point I'll have a better idea as to whether or not I'm cut out for the job!
What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I was raised on classical music. Then when I turned 12 I went to the most wonderful music camp where suddenly I was met by a whole group of kids who were just like me and became some of my dearest friends (and a few of them will be in the orchestra with me this summer)! In that moment I realized that this is where I belong.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
As a prospective music teacher the biggest challenge is entering a sector which seems to value the arts less and less and teaching students who have had less and less musical experience. The focus has really turned to maths and sciences and music is no longer a priority in education. However that is also the reason I want to become a teacher so that I can help make music a valuable and enjoyable experience for as many people as I can in my career!
How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
I know that I will meet countless amazing and dedicated musicians through the NYOC and I will not only learn so much from them all during the summer but I will be able to connect with them for the rest of my life which is an unbelievable opportunity!
Do you write or arrange your own music?
Not yet... but I will learn before my degree is done!
Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
Yes I participate in a lot of musical theatre I do Scottish Highland dancing and I dabble in film too!
What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
For 2 summers I have worked as a ranger at Sandbanks Provincial Park in Ontario so I have gained a lot of interest in the outdoors while giving nature hikes and presentations to visitors at the park. I also play basketball Highland dance and make films.
Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
The Beatles (George is my favourite)
What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
I don't have a favourite because there are way too many but every time I hear the slow movement of Schumann's Op 47 Piano Quartet in E flat time stands still and I melt into a puddle.
What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
September by Earth Wind & Fire
If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would be a park ranger/Natural Heritage Educator at Sandbanks Provincial Park in Ontario for my third year and counting! I'll miss being outdoors all summer and getting paid to do it with my lovely coworkers but this was an opportunity I just couldn't pass up.
What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
People may be surprised to learn that I sew and have made quite a few pieces of my own clothes! On top of this people are also often very surprised that I am a trained classical singer and sometimes sing opera arias at recitals where people know I will be playing violin just to throw them off and entertain them all at the same time!
What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Don't give up when things get tough! There is nothing more meaningful than creating art and sharing it.
