Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
Percussion appeared to me as a mysterious island of strange sound and intricate rhythm. The draw of the unknown due to the distinct nature of each instrument in the percussion family was why I choose percussion. My interest in the beat aspect of music the placement of short and long sounds to create an ever changing rhythmic field can be best explored through an unpitched medium thus percussion seemed the obvious choice for further exploration.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I intend to work in the performance composition and technical areas of music. Since the breadth that music extends to is enormous I expect to be continually busy and interested.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
The attention to detail which is required in playing art music is applicable to all areas of music. I enjoy the precomposed aspect of classical music however I am not limited to listening or playing just concert hall repertoire. Maybe one day I'll become a polka accordionist. Who knows?

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
I feel a large challenge in pursuing music will be maintaining the demand to hear it. It will be easy to compose pieces and put on events but whether or not the public will stay interested is another story. To maintain a fully sustainable career in music I will have to focus on both the creative aspect and the business aspect.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
The experience of playing with such a highly esteemed orchestra will develop my skills considerably. I expect that both the teachers and fellow performers will expand my knowledge of music extensively.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
I'm currently studying composition for an undergraduate bachelor of music at McGill University. Most of my works have been performed and/or recorded.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
The visual medium mostly - painting sketching etc.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Outside of music I am interested in the fields of mathematics physics and computer science. I have pursued sciences throughout school and am currently working on combining the fields. I'm very interested in the electronic and technological field of music.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Currently I've been listening to mostly Boulez Stockhausen and Webern. This is not consistent however.

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
I'm a fan of hip-hop such as Captain Murphy (Flying Lotuses alter ego; look into his Duality EP) and Madvillain (the combination of MF Doom and Madlib; look into that too) however favorites range from electronica such as Telefon Tel Aviv to jazz for example John Coltrane.

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Another unfair question. I'll just provide you with some damn good tunes to check out: Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky and Webern's Passacaglia Op. 1.

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Listening to Lutoslawski's String Quartet performed by the Kronos Quartet at the moment.

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Chillin' in the home town or otherwise working. I expect I will still compose some new compositions even with being at NYO this summer.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you now would it?

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
I think it's key to be interested in music. Though you may have to play scales or get through snare drum technique it's still key to explore and experiment. I also believe listening to music is an essential ingredient towards creating music.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
There were many though what comes to mind is the first performance of the session we did in Stratford Ontario. We played Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture outside by the river. By that time in the concert the sun had set so our stand lights drew swarms of moths from the surrounding darkness. As we battled the bugs and low light we reached Tchaikovsky's addition of a new instrument to the orchestra: the cannon. While still trying to maintain focus a barrage of gunfire shook the ground from the artillery in the field beside us. The excitement power and generally the craziness of the concert was quite a memorable moment.
