Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I chose harp because I really like the way the notes are visually laid out. I enjoy being able to play both harmonic and melodic elements in an ensemble or on my own. Also it's just a ridiculously cool instrument.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I love collaborating with artists from different fields and I hope to play a lot more music for theatre and dance. It would be especially fantastic to play in the orchestra for a ballet or opera company some day.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I find that although it requires some serious discipline it is extremely rewarding and varied work. Every concert presents a different challenge and introduces me to new people material or opinions. No two interpretations are exactly alike and I love the elements of chance and spontaneity in live musical performance.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
My biggest challenge is finding enough time and focus to do as much practicing as I'd like. Either that or transporting pedal harps through winter weather.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
Spending time with other motivated musicians is the best way I've found to push myself further and I am excited to be inspired by the orchestra members and coaches this summer.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
Only occasionally - mostly for celtic music - but it's an area in which I'd love to gain more confidence!

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
I am a little bit addicted to performing arts - I spend a lot of time involved in the technical side of theatre and I also get mixed up from time to time in modern dance and flamenco.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Boggle and chocolate chip & banana muffins.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
I've recently been listening to a lot of David Jalbert's beautiful piano playing.

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
It's really hard to choose but Owen Pallett's music is pretty great.

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
La Mer is one of my favourites so I'm very happy to have the chance to play it this summer!

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
The last thing I listened to on my shuffle was "Sweet Georgia Blue" by Plumes preceded by Toto's "Africa."

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would probably be busking in the Montreal metro or on the Halifax waterfront.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I once won a 4-foot-tall stuffed cat in a Halloween colouring competition at the local drugstore.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Well if I could go back in time I would make sure to do more playing by ear and improvising in addition to reading from a score. I think those skills are extremely important and I feel that it's harder although definitely not impossible to start improvising later in life!
