Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I'd been playing the violin since I was five. One day when I was in grade 12 I was daydreaming in calculus class when it suddenly occurred to me that I should start playing the viola. (I have no idea what made that thought pop into my head but I suppose me playing the viola was meant to be!) Luckily my former violin teacher had a viola that I could borrow and I spent the summer learning how to read alto clef. I began my undergrad on violin but when the professors at my school found out that I also played viola all of a sudden everyone needed me to play in their ensemble. It soon got to the point where I was playing viola for everything except my violin lessons. I finally made the full switch to viola at the start of my third year and have never regretted it!

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I would love to be in a professional orchestra someday!

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
My parents aren't musicians but they used to play a lot of classical music recordings in the house especially this CD they had of Holst's "The Planets". My favourite movie when I was little was also Disney's "Fantasia". I guess I was just so used to listening to classical music that it only made sense for me to start playing it!

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
I'm from New Brunswick and the classical music community here is relatively small. In a way it's nice because pretty much all the classical musicians in the province know each other but there's not as much going on here as there is in other places Eventually I'll probably have to move to a larger city.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
I'm really excited to make connections with other musicians from other parts of the country! I'm also looking forward to playing repertoire that I wouldn't have the chance to play back home.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
Yes sometimes! I used to arrange violin parts to Beatles songs so my friends and I could play in our high school coffeehouses.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
I love writing! I have piles and piles of journals at home.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I do a lot of reading and writing. I also love to travel!

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Tchaikovsky and Debussy

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
The Beatles Joni Mitchell Simon and Garfunkel Oscar Peterson The Police

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
That's a really tough question! I'd have to say Debussy's Arabesque No. 1

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Peanuts - The Police

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would probably be working at Dolma Food a small independent grocery store in Moncton where I'm a cashier. We sell a lot of local and organic food. Come check us out if you're ever in Moncton :) I would also be playing at a lot of weddings.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I love swing music and would love to learn how to dance to it someday! I'm also slightly double-jointed in my elbows.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Practice practice practice! Sometimes it will feel really hard but it can also be really fun too. There will be days where you'll be so frustrated that you'll feel like throwing your instrument down and never playing again but don't ever give up!
