How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
When I was very young I saw my two cousins playing the flute and told my Mom that I wanted to as well... and I have been playing ever since!

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
1) To win a position in a major Canadian orchestra 2) To record and perform with my wind quintet 3) To establish an El Sistema-inspired program (or help develop an existing one) wherever I end up

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I can't say there is one event that made me decide to pursue classical music - it has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and it has always been my passion. I'm not even sure what I would be doing if I weren't a musician.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
I think our biggest challenge is the fact that there are an incredible number of talented people in the music profession these days but a limited number of existing jobs. That being said it just comes down to being flexible - it might mean developing new skills and learning to play in more than one style or taking initiative to make opportunities rather than wait for them to come to you.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
Having been in NYOC before I am confident that I will learn a great deal about orchestral and chamber playing not only from an amazing conductor and faculty but also from an inspiring group of friends.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
Not yet.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
Well I have some pretty great dance moves...

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Cooking Fitness Reading Movies Volunteering

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
I can't pick one favourite that's way too hard.

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Again tricky... probably Ingrid Michaelson

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
For the moment Mahler 3

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Golden Train by Justin Nozuka

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Probably something musical.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I used to be a spelling bee kid... glad I decided to go with music instead!

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
I would say two things. First to remember that music is incredibly subjective and that nobody wins every audition and every competition. Second and most importantly life is about balance. It's important to be dedicated to music (or any career) but not at the expense of your health happiness or personal relationships.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
I can't decide on just one but some highlights were the trip to the National Mall in Washington after the Strathmore concert, playing Shostakovich 10, winning the Wacky Olympics, Jon Welmers getting emotional in his last pre-concert pep talk... :)
