Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
There was a Navy Cadet core in Thunder Bay that I joined when I was 9. I wanted to join the band and they needed another trumpet player so that's where I started. Fortunately, it was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. I couldn't figure out how to make a nice sound and I couldn't stand the way it made me feel after ever time I'd finished playing it. This went on for close to a year before my mom asked if I wanted to switch to side drum. Eleven years later, I'm in the National Youth Orchestra.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I yearn to play in an orchestra whose members are dedicated to providing the highest quality of orchestral performance, both for itself and its audience. I'm also fond of chamber music. An orchestra that promotes chamber music is simultaneously strengthening it's fundamentals as an ensemble.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
Ludwig van Beethoven's Overture to Egmont was the final straw. I've been lucky to have a very strong support system from close friends and family.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Letting the trivial bog me down.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
The National Youth Orchestra of Canada is a vital part of the development of any young Canadian classical musician. The support system developed by the NYOC for both during and after the session is crucial to the growth of a musician. It's humbling to know I'll be a part of this wonderful tradition.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
I've re-arranged orchestral percussion scores for smaller chamber ensembles which can afford the contribution of only one player.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
I've taken dance lessons here and there, but I'd be the last person to say I can dance.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I love to play pool, golf, and I try to keep up on the latest in Futbol.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Berliner Philharmoniker. All 128 world class musicians.

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
The Arctic Monkeys

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
It really depends on the day, but on the majority of days, Tchaikovsky's Ballet, The Nutcracker

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
The Buddy Rich Big Band

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Imagining myself in the NYOC and trying to guess what would be on the next year's NYOC audition list.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I've recently found out, through a convoluted story, that my family is extremely German.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Light the fire and never let the trivial snuff it.
