How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I went to an orchestra concert when I was young. My mother loved classical music so she wanted me to choose an instrument that I wanted to play. I pointed at the cello section and I told her that's what I wanted to play (randomly!) and after that, my father got me the cello and I have been playing the cello ever since!

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I'm going to earn bachelors in music performance (not quite sure where yet), and that is how much I have planned so far... Since I love everything about music such as composing, playing with chamber music or orchestras, improvising, or arranging, I want to do everything that is related to music.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
My first cello concerto ever to learn was the Haydn Cello Concerto in C major, after that, I realized the fascinating works of classical music. That is how I realized that I want to continue on with classical music. But as much as I love classical music, I love other genre of music as well.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Currently, the hardest part is to work hard at your goals, which in this case, is to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. But I believe that the hardest part will be to earn a job in the music industry after 20 years later. I have a big dream to work with big orchestras and continue with my solo career...

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
New Brunswick is where I currently live right now. It's quite a small province and classical music is not renowned in New Brunswick. And I believe that I have to get out of New Brunswick to challenge myself, and learn more difficult repertoire, and find out how other players play from other Provinces.

Do you write or arrange your own music?

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I love to sing! Other then classical, I sing and perform in school musicals. Recently, I had the chance to perform as The Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera. I am also in school rock bands to have some fun! I often sing in the band, play the cello or sometimes just jam around with the guitar!

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Janos Starker, Gregor Piatigorsky...

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Jack Conte, Ben Caplan, Paper Kites...

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Mahler Symphony no.5 4th movement.

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I have a YouTube Channel (JaeChongMusic). I do covers and compositions in my channel. I would be making videos all summer in my studio, and advertising myself online as a cellist.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
As much as I'm not good at it, I love to Video Blog, to talk about my life on video. I also love directing. I make music videos with my friends sometimes, and I make some documentaries.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Learning about scales may be frusturating at start, everything will be worth it. You will later make beautiful music if you work hard at it!
