What advice would you give young artists just starting out? / Quel conseil donneriez-vous aux jeunes artistes qui viennent de commencer?
An excellent question! When learning to play an instrument, don't restrict yourself to the study of music. Rather, treat it like a huge cultural voyage. All art, from paintings to poetry to music and everything in between, are connected in their ideas, themes and style. To better understand Tchaikovsky, read the works of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. To better perform Debussy, understand the paintings of Monet and Cézanne. This will give you a better understanding of the artistic context of the music, and perhaps give you new expressive ideas for the work. Culture is your domain, explore it!
