Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
In my elementary school, we started learning band instruments in Grade 6. I knew I wanted to play a brass instrument, and I had heard a brass quintet over the summer and thought the tuba was pretty cool (I almost chose the French horn then, but I'm glad I chose the tuba!)

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
My ultimate musical goal is to earn myself a spot playing in one of the major Canadian orchestras.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
Well, I was lucky as a teenager to have a spot playing in the Georgian Bay Symphony in Owen Sound, Ontario. As I went through high school I was enjoying playing with the orchestra more and more, and decided to study music in university. I wasn't really sure where I would end up with a degree in music, but having just completed my Bachelor's degree I'm very happy that I chose to study music. I've made many great friends, and have had many very fulfilling musical experiences through performing and teaching, I do hope they continue!

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
My view of a musician's career is that you have to be very entrepreneurial. Booking gigs and meeting other musicians, finding an audience to listen to you (and who hopefully pay to do so!), creating and arranging your own music, preparing for auditions and competitions, all while ensuring you have time to practice and maintain a high musical standard - it takes an incredible amount of time and dedication, but is definitely very rewarding.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
As someone who would like to play in a professional orchestra, the NYOC is an ideal place to study and train for a career.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
On occasion

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
singing in the shower (and occasionally in public) haha

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
farming, home-brewing (beer), traveling, cooking (and eating!), BBQing, gardening, and stargazing.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Yannick Nezet-Seguin (conductor),

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Stan Rogers

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Le Tombeau de Couperin, by Ravel (piano version)

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Stan Rogers

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would most likely be at home in Mildmay Ontario, hopefully with a job outdoors (landscaping or something similar) and helping out on my parents' dairy farm.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I guess I've already mentioned some of the exciting stuff (like growing up on a dairy farm, and brewing my own beer with a couple good buddies), I guess another would be that I, for better or for worse, am a Leafs fan :p

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
If you love what you do, don't let anything stop you from doing it.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
I was first a member of the NYOC last year (2011), and I have many fond memories: meeting so many amazing people from across Canada, the talent show, working with Larry and Nick, chilling with the low brass guys, beach days, and playing in Koerner Hall with my parents, family, and elementary school music teacher in the audience! Looking forward to more great memories this year!
