Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I took it up to impress a girl I liked. Some people will tell you the bassoon doesn't get you girls. Those people are just jealous.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I want to be involved in a variety of musical genres - chamber, orchestral, electronic. I'm also quite interested in arts administration and I'm open to the possibility of working in that field in the future.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
In my last year of high school I started digging deeper into some of the scores I was performing in youth orchestra and started researching the human beings behind them and the societies and conditions that produced those people. It felt like whole new worlds were opening up to me when I did that, and I realized I'd found my calling and I had to keep digging deeper. There's more than enough discoveries to be made in classical music to keep me excited for a lifetime

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Not just making a living, but staying happy and creatively engaged in what I'm doing. It's hard sometimes to hold on to the excitement and joy that was there when I first got involved in music.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
You grow fastest when you're out of your comfort zone, and NYOC is the kind of environment where you can really take risks as a musician, knowing that your colleagues want you to succeed. There are elements of my playing that I don't feel totally secure in, and I'm looking forward to breaking them down.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
No, but I want to!

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
A little bit of writing on the side

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Coffee, philosophy, history (especially 20th century), thoroughly exploring the backstage areas of every venue I play in, travel, and cat videos.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Carlos Kleiber

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
At the moment, Radiohead

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Metallica, Crystal Castles, System of a Down, this summer's NYOC repertoire!

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Trying to figure out what "real life" (i.e. not being in university) is like in my new home in Toronto.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I lived in Oman for four years, I've played guitar in a heavy metal band, and I have worked as a bartender at a zoo.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Don't worry about being "talented" enough to make it. If you want it badly enough and you work hard enough for it, you'll make it happen. Take care of yourself, though - remember that you're a human being first and an artist second, and that you need your physical and mental well being to do your best.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
One night in Halifax I enjoyed an unbelievable meal at dusk right on the waterfront with some truly great friends and watched fireworks go off across the river. For an hour, life was perfect.
