Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I like to think my instrument chose me - I don't know what drove me to try the harp, but from the first note I played I knew that it was the right instrument for me

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
Ideally, I'd like to have a varied career, performing as a soloist and as part of orchestras, chamber groups, and rock or jazz bands, as well as teaching.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
My love of my instrument and my love of performing. Being able to produce something, alone or with a group, that can have such a powerful impact on so many people is a magical experience. And I would never have had the confidence to choose music as a career path without the help and encouragement of my parents, teachers and friends

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
I think the biggest challenge I face, and the most interesting one, is attracting and holding on to an audience. In order to draw in people who aren't familiar with classical music I want to experiment with unconventional concert formats, venues, programs and the like, all with the aim of introducing the music I love to as many people as possible.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
The NYOC brings together so many great musicians, both as students and as coaches. I loved having the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with such creative people last year, and I can't wait to do it a second time

Do you write or arrange your own music?
Not very much, but I plan on working on it more in the future

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I love hiking and cycling, cooking, gardening, dancing and studying science, math, languages and history.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Bach, Stravinsky and Ravel

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Currently, probably The Rite of Spring. Overall, it would be impossible to choose just one

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Only Skin - Joanna Newsom

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Working, gigging and volunteering

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I'm a big fan of science fiction, both TV and literature

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Don't limit yourself to a single style, genre or career goal - use your time as a student to learn to be ready for anything. You have no idea what kind of opportunities will present themselves

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
Dancing all day at the Sunfest World Music festival… or the banana tree!
