Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I actually don't remember. When I was six I told my mother that I wanted to play the harp. So she contacted the local teacher who said that I need to take 2 years of piano and be between the age of 9 and 13. I waited until I was 10 and then began lessons.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
Professionally what really intrigues me about being a musician is the fact that your career is very diverse. I'm also a composer and I want to teacher, perform and compose.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I originally was never very inspired by classical music. It always scared me as I knew there were performances coming up and expectations I had to fulfill. I was also playing on a small celtic harp (an instrument I can say in retrospect that was not for me) and so my teacher bribed me with a chance to play on the full concert grand pedal harp in my lesson if I took part in the Calgary Kiwanis Festival. After playing the first note on the large instrument I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. I think that the resonant quality of the instrument is really what spoke to me.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Personally I think it is discipline. I've always been a very obsessed person, I have great capacity to work for hours on end without break. However, sometimes I am obsessed with the wrong things at the wrong times and then motivating myself to for example compose can be difficult if I am very inspired by performance.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
I think it will help me develop as an orchestral musician. I love the orchestra, as a performer and a composer and the more time I spend with it the more I can bring to it.

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Most likely continuing my studies of harp in Montreal as well as attending the Canadian Summer Harp Institute and the Montreal Contemporary Music Lab as a composer and a performer. I've learned alot this first year of university but I haven't had enough time to really put all of it into practice yet, I think regardless of what I'm during this summer is the perfect time to do that.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I'm used to people being surprised when I tell them that I play the harp. Perhaps the fact that I'm very interested in eSports. As a young teen who was very into video games I have watched it grow from a small community online which 500 people at night watching Korean videos of matches at 3 in the morning to Teamliquid Starleague 3 where 80 000 viewers tuned into one of the first broadcasts.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
I can pass on some advice I was once given: you need to immerse yourself in all of the arts, go see dance, see paintings, go to concerts. This will help your artistic development the most. Also, I think knowing and identifying parts of your own personality that can aid you and hinder you is a very good thing to do from the start. Enjoying what you do is not enough in music you need to be compelled to do it at the highest level with great consistency, and you need to strive for that every day.
