Age / âge

How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
My mom, grandma and most of the people I knew as a kid played violin, so I thought it was something that all grownups did - and of course I wanted to be grownup too! I don't think there was ever really a conscious decision on anyone's part; it's simply a part of my family's lifestyle.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I honestly can't think of anything I wouldn't want to do. Orchestra, of course, and its beautiful and colourful repertoire; chamber music in all its permutations; solo work if I can manage it; I would love to teach as well.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I've spent so much time and energy on it, more than anything else five times over. It just makes me so happy! By the time I was 11 I knew a concert hall was home to me; there was no way I could do anything else.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Um ... lack of opportunities? I don't know. Obviously practicing and improving is always going to be hard work, but I'm pretty optimistic.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
One can never get enough orchestral experience. It's a whole different skill set from the mechanics of playing - you have to practice ensemble as well.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
Once in a long, long while.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
Sometimes I write, if I have time and inspiration.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Traveling, books, video games, wilderness-y stuff, running.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
There is no way I could narrow it down to even the Top 20.

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
See above.

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Again, no single favourite, but I could play unaccompanied Bach forever.

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Probably attempting to make money in one capacity or another. Doing a few music camps, maybe. I don't really know.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I almost decided to drop violin and go into piano a few years back; I only decided to do the opposite because pianists don't generally get to play in orchestras.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Practicing isn't as hard as you think it is. Also, never turn up an opportunity to join an orchestra or chamber group or master class or what-have-you - anything with other people. If practicing is something you do exclusively alone in your room with only your metronome for company, you're doing it wrong.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
All the performances, of course; late night sight-reading; ice cream creations in the dining hall; rehearsal shenanigans; ground monkey.
