Canada-India Youth Orchestra
Two orchestras join to become one.

TORONTO, ON (Thursday, May 9) – The National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYOC) is proudly embarking on the next phase of a unique cultural initiative to form the Canada-India Youth Orchestra (CIYO). This groundbreaking partnership brings together some of the most talented young classical orchestral musicians in Canada and India for an intensive training program in Bengaluru, India.
On May 14, 2013, 32 NYOC musicians and three faculty members will travel to Bangalore (Bengaluru), to collaborate with 35 young musicians who have been recruited by the Bangalore School of Music (BSM). As members of the CIYO, these musicians will have the unique opportunity to take part in this very prestigious program. They will enjoy master classes, one-on-one lessons with leading instructors and rehearse a challenging repertoire. The training program will culminate in a performance by the CIYO on May 25th at Bangalore’s (Bengaluru’s) Chowdiah Memorial Hall, under the baton of the celebrated Canadian conductor Alain Trudel.
This Canada-India partnership began last year when leading Indian musicians approached the NYOC to initiate this first ever cross-cultural mentoring program. Considered one of the leading national youth orchestras in the world, the NYOC is excited to share the knowledge and expertise that has earned it international renown.
In 2012 four Indian musicians were invited to participate in the NYOC’s summer program. This included five weeks of full orchestral rehearsals, private lessons, innovative and integrated injury preventions programs and a two-week tour including performances in leading orchestral venues. This summer the NYOC is pleased to, once again, welcome three Indian students to join its intensive training session as guest musicians.
This exchange offers these young Indian musicians an unparalleled opportunity to train in a focused, pre-professional environment, and play some of the most demanding repertoires under the supervision of leading Canadian professionals. The creation of the CIYO extends this opportunity to more young musicians in India, where the chance to learn and play western orchestral music is much more limited.
The CIYO initiative also includes an outreach program at St. Mary’s Orphanage in Bangalore (Bengaluru), where BSM has been instrumental in forming a brass band. Members of the CIYO will perform for the orphanage and participate in musical instruction. The young musicians of the NYOC will also bring to Bangalore (Bengaluru), donated musical instruments and music supplies for their fellow musicians from India to use on a permanent basis.

“We look to an ongoing partnership with the NYOC and aim at building world class young Indian players, who will play at national and international levels in the future,” said Aruna Sunderlal, Founder and Managing Trustee, the Bangalore School of Music. “The NYOC will also be instrumental in building many chamber orchestras in our country and a national youth orchestra in the future.”
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada is the Honorary Patron of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He was pleased to lend his support to artists, who are some of the most public ambassadors our country has.

For over five decades, NYOC has enjoyed an iconic reputation as Canada's orchestral finishing school, providing one of the most in-depth orchestral training programs in the country. Our tuition-free training program, which runs from June to August, provides our students with more hours of practical orchestral training in one summer than most university programs offer in one year. Approximately 1 in 3 professional orchestral musicians in Canada are alumni of NYOC.
