Born in Contrecoeur, Québec, Mathieu Harel began his studies at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, followed by further studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He then joined the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec as the Second Bassoon, and the Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra as the Associate Principal/Second Bassoon. For more than 5 years, Harel has held the post of Associate Principal Bassoon of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
Harel is a professor of bassoon at both McGill University and the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal.
