01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
12 years old

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I chose the tuba because the oboe was already taken and I was the heavy kid in my band class.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I hope one day, as most NYO musicians do, to win a full time position with a professional orchestra and also hope to have a successful career performing chamber music and solo repertoire. I strive to be musical beyond the limitations of my instrument and I hope one day to be more of an outstanding musician than an outstanding tuba player.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
I am an avid reader and also enjoy writing poetry, I enjoy playing ping pong and basketball, I play a lot of sports board and card games and I have recently started painting.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
On occasion.

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
Andras Schiff.

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Gerry Mulligan's Symphonic Entente for Bari Sax and Orchestra.

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
None of them thrill me right now but I'll say Alexei Lebedev's Concerto in one Movement.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
I decided to pursue a career in classical music because at the end of high school I felt that it was the thing that most challenged me in my life. I was always a fairly good student and music had the ability to take me out of my comfort zone and to really stimulate my problem solving skills. If I hadn't pursued music in university I probably would have gotten a degree in English.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
I think the biggest challenge I face in my pursuit of a career in music is striving to remain open-minded and to learn from musics and performers of all varieties. I think that music is so much more than classical performance and there is a lot to be learned from branching out and listening to whatever whenever possible.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
I applied to NYO because it seemed like a step towards a fruitful career.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
No, I cancelled other applications after receiving an award of excellence.

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
If I wasn't touring with NYO this summer I would be playing/working/relaxing in Edmonton. I spend as much time at home as I can because I don't imagine I'll get to settle in Edmonton any time soon.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?

Pending completion of the program, the award of excellence will be my first major award.
