01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
15

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
My mother played violin in high school and ever since I saw my brother and sister start lessons on it, I decided it was my destiny to play a stringed instrument. I started playing the violin at age 12 as part of my music requirement set by my school and immediately fell in love with it. Just before I began high school, I tried the viola and discovered I could create more colors on it than I could on violin. I have never looked back.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical/Computational Engineering as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Texas at Austin. I believe it would be difficult to find a cross-over between these majors, but after completing my second year of university, my goal is to one day work in data science and artificial intelligence for a technology company and join a local symphony orchestra. However, I understand a lot is up in the air, so I'm expecting my views to change before I graduate.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
In my spare time I compose music, nap frequently, play Pokemon competitively, and do personal projects in computer science.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
Yes

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
Marc-André Hamelin

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Leo Ornstein's "Morning in the Woods"

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Bartok Viola Concerto

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
Before I graduated high school, I had to decide whether or not I'd give up music to pursue my education in engineering. After much deliberation, I determined that it would be foolish for me to quit one of my life's passions and so I set out to ensure that music would somehow be present daily in my remaining years. The thought of living the rest of my life without my viola sounded boring and tasteless, so keeping classical music in my future was not at all a difficult decision to make.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
I think, along with many others, that the most difficult challenge I'll face will be securing a stable job in music in the future. I understand there's always a gig to be played and new performances to be heard, but having a stable job in a local symphony is my goal in addition to a career in engineering. I imagine finding a position in a symphony will be immensely more challenging than my career.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
A few of my friends who did it in the past encouraged me to apply.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
It's been a while since I've been a part of a professional orchestra, so I'm certain that just being in this environment of incredibly talented musicians will be therapeutic. I have also had a few years away from my latest education in French, so it'll be refreshing to be living in a bilingual community again.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
No

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
If I decided not to tour with NYO Canada this summer, I'd be a working as a software intern at Mira Geoscience in Montreal for my time off from school.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
Although my music career has just begun, I'd say my proudest moment in my music career is that I've been fortunate enough to join both the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America for their tour of China last summer as well as this orchestra for our tour of Canada and Portugal this summer. It's been a goal of mine to join the national youth orchestras of the countries in which I hold citizenship, and I'm ecstatic that I'll have the great opportunity to represent both countries through my passion of music.

17. What scholarships, if any, have you been awarded in the past year?/ Quelles bourses, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?
