01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
11

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I had always been attracted to brass instruments as a child as both my parents play brass instruments (my mom plays trumpet and my dad plays trombone). My mother urged me to NOT become a trumpet player (lol), and therefore the logical choice was trombone. The slide obviously interested me, and I loved how loud I could play on it. Pretty classic low brass love story from there on in.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I'm striving to be a professional performing musician. I would love to win a job and play in an orchestra, but I am also interested in the freelance world, as well as the teaching realm of music. I teach private lessons and often run clinics for low brass students at various middle schools and high schools. Going to school for an education degree is certainly a possibility for my future. The ultimate goal is to make my living through being involved in music.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
I am studying political science as a minor at the University of Toronto. Politics have always interested me, and I do my best to follow Canadian and American politics. I also love travelling, and that is part of the reason I am so excited about this years NYO tour in Portugal. I love consuming and learning about caffeinated and alcoholic beverages alike, particularly coffee/espresso and craft beers/whiskey.I love the outdoors, including camping and hiking, especially in and around the Rocky Mountain region of Alberta.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
No

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
Michael Mulcahy

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Strauss Alpine Symphony

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Grondahl Concerto

09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
Having the opportunity to hear, get coached by, and play alongside the amazing musicians who participated in the Canadian National Brass Project during the summer of 2015. Having the opportunity to not only meet these musicians, but play for them and learn from them and pick their brains was an outstanding experience.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
It was not until the summer before grade 12 when I decided I was going into music for certain. I had an extremely moving experience during MusiCamp Alberta, during which time I was conducted by Gillian Mackay who also conducts at the University of Toronto. She was so inspiring and I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with her about music school and my future. I resolved that I had to attempt to make music the biggest part of my life for at least the few years to come, and I have never regretted that decision.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
I think striving to be a classical musician can be extremely taxing mentally. It is important to constantly remind yourself of why you got into music in the first place, and focus on the factors that you can control in your practice. Block out the competitive vibes and the daunting odds/numbers for winning an orchestral job and just focus on becoming the best you can be.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
I had heard it was one of the best musical experiences you can get.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
One of the best parts about doing a program like NYO is that you get to meet many people who have the same passions as you and who are just as dedicated to their craft. So many amazing people participate and friendships and contacts are made which otherwise may never have occurred. So, certainly meeting people and just being engrossed in awesome music making are just two ways I'm sure I will benefit from participating in the NYO Canada.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
Ceremonial Guard Band

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
Likely playing on parliament hill with the Ceremonial Guard Band in Ottawa. I had also planned on auditioning for the National Academy Orchestra, but cancelled my audition upon hearing I was accepted into NYO.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
I think the first time I was accepted into the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. I couldn't, believe it, I was just so happy.

17. What scholarships, if any, have you been awarded in the past year?/ Quelles bourses, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?
Arthur Pletner Scholarship - U of T
