01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
13

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I tried to learn the trumpet but after many attempts without producing any sound I convinced my grade 7 music teacher it was best to put me on drums. Never looked back!

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
My main goal is to obtain a principal timpani position with a professional orchestra.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
Some of my interests include travel, observing the laws of physics in everyday life, spending time with family, making timpani mallets, etc. or other percussion accessories.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
No

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
It changes every so often. Right now it's Don Liuzzi, timpanist of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Tough to choose...last year it was Verdi Requiem or Brahms 1, but today it's W. Schuman's Symphony 3

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra by Philip Glass

09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
Last summer was quite the time with so many fantastic memories....getting to know new friends, hanging out during the down time on tour and being part of one big musical family.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
My high school music teacher Alex Voros inspired me to pursue classical music. His music classes/band were always a lot of fun and a steady supply of jokes never hurt!

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
The biggest challenge I face would be staying highly motivated to be at the top of my game. With so many talented musicians all competing for the same jobs success is only possible if one follows through with their plan with the highest level of motivation and a proper head space.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
The music, the people and of course, the tour!

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
Working with the distinguished faculty, meeting new friends and performing in various venues across the country was and will again be an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Last summer was a time of great personal and musical growth and I look forward to experiencing this again.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
Didn't apply to any others

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
Practicing, travelling, attending one of the various timpani or xylophone seminars and probably finding a part time job.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
There would have to be two: One was a 2 week stint as guest principal timpanist with the Victoria Symphony. The other was playing in the percussion section of the TSO for the performances of Italia by Casella. It was truly an honour to share the stage with my teachers and the other great musicians in the orchestra.
