01. How old were you when you started playing your instrument?/ Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
Two, but I turned three a couple days later.

02. Why did you choose your instrument?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
Its hard to remember, but I know a big part of it was my mom's private studio. She was always teaching violin lessons after school and I guess it made me want to be a part of it.

03. Describe some of your professional goals./Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
Of course I would love to play in a reputable orchestra or chamber group, but I would also love to explore opportunities in composition, perhaps combining my experience in classical music with my interest in hip-hop and electronic music production.

04. What are your other interests and/or hobbies?/ Quels sont vos autres intérêts ou passe-temps?
I spend most of my spare time making hip-hop instrumentals (beats) and experimenting with other elements of electronic music production.

05. Do you write/arrange your own music?/ Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
Until recently mostly just beats, but this year I've started trying to compose in a more traditional sense.

06. Who is your favourite classical musician?/ Quel est votre artiste (musicien) préféré ?
James Ehnes or Rachel Podger

07. What is your favourite piece of music?/ Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Every time I hear something new this changes, but at the moment its Grieg's string quartet in g minor.

08. What is your favourite concerto for your instrument?/ Quel est votre concerto préféré pour votre instrument?
Brahms, or Elgar... hard to pick...

09. For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?/ Pour participants vétérans : Quels sont vos souvenirs préférés de la session ou tournée précédente de l’ONJC ?
Although there were far too many moments to pick just one, I'd say the one that had the biggest impact was our performance of Mahler 9 at the Winspear Centre during last year's tour. It was our last performance of the piece and the emotional energy was indescribable.

10. What made you decide to pursue classical music?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
My first summer with the NYOC (2010) gave me a fresh perspective on classical music that has inspired me to work towards having as many opportunities to play as many great works as possible.

11. What do you think is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?/ Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
Finding a lasting way to play comfortably, and learning to find a positive way to deal with never being good enough, no matter how good you are.

12. Why did you choose to apply to NYO Canada?/ Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de poser votre candidature pour NYO Canada?
Initially it took heavy convincing from an alumni in my family, but since then I've been hooked.

13. How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?/ Comment bénéficierez-vous de votre participation dans le programme de NYO Canada?
Attending a smaller school means that I don't get the experience of playing in a large orchestra with serious rep, so the NYOC provides training, experience, and much needed inspiration that I wouldn't get elsewhere. The people that you meet through the program are also going to be recurring figures throughout your career in music, so making friends in this type of setting is also a huge plus.

14. Were you accepted to any other summer music programs this year?/ Avez-vous été accepté/e à tout autre programme musical estival cette année?
Yes, the masterclass program at Orford.

15. If you weren’t touring with the NYO Canada, what would you be doing during the summer?/ Si vous n’étiez pas en tournée avec NYO Canada, que feriez-vous cet été?
Working full time selling tickets to Anne of Green Gables the Musical (and other shows) at the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown. I would spend at least a couple weeks at a summer music program. Besides that I'd be either in my basement making beats or at the beach.

16. What was the proudest moment of your music career thus far?/ Jusqu’ici, quel est le moment de votre carrière musicale qui vous a apporté le plus de fierté?
Listening to the recording the 2013 orchestra made of Mahler 9.

17. What scholarships, if any, have you been awarded in the past year?/ Quelles bourses, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?
The Pat and Margaret Maloney Scholarship in Music (Memorial University)

18. What awards, if any, have you won in the past year?/ Quels prix, le cas échéant, avez-vous remporté au cours de la dernière année?
None

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
I have been in plays and musicals before but not regularly

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
No idea

What advice would you give young artists just starting out? / Quel conseil donneriez-vous aux jeunes artistes qui viennent de commencer?
