Age / âge
How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I grew up with a piano in the home and I would often tinker away on it. I quickly fell in love with the instrument, and when my parents enrolled my older brother in lessons, I begged and cajoled them to let me join. After discovering that the piano was one skill at which I could consistently best my brother, and the immense joy I took from performing, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career as a performing pianist.
What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I am interested in bringing a fierce sense of style and composure to the concert stage. By presenting a musicological understanding of composers and their works, as well as sharing my own relationship with the music, the audience can forge a deeper connection with the music itself. I am pursuing a career as a classical pianist that acknowledges the power of the performance space through lighting, fashion and wardrobe, and an emotional and immersive audience experience. I want to present the piano in a culturally relevant and accessible context for today's audience without compromising the integrity of the music. It is my desire to make my living as a professional performing pianist, through innovative solo recitals, collaborative work in orchestras and chamber ensembles, and as a concerto soloist.
What made you decide to pursue classical music?
For as long as I can remember, I had a special relationship with the piano, and I have always thrived off the energy of performing. Though I considered other career paths, I decided that I want to wake up every morning in the pursuit of what I love.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Getting distracted by the plethora of wonderful people and experiences this life has to offer. And actually getting meaningful, paid work as a pianist so I can pay my rent using my skills as a musician and pianist rather than relying on my barista skills for financial support.

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I'm thrilled to be touring with NYOC this summer, but if I weren't, I would be learning piano concertos for this coming season, working as a barista at a local whisky and espresso bar, getting my first tattoo, volunteering at a folk music festival, and riding my bicycle.
What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
Honestly, you know very little about me, so most everything. For now, I'll let you know that I spent eight years of my life (including all of high school) in Senegal, West Africa. And to clarify, Senegal is nowhere near South Africa, so please don't get them confused.
What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
I'd tell them that sometimes there are times to practice eight hours a day, and sometimes there are times to go on dates and fix your bicycle and live your life. Being dedicated and being excellent does require dedicated hard work, but that isn't everything. Maybe I'd tell them not to miss the mosaic because they're staring at one tile. It's really easy to do. But if you forget to live and breathe and take care of yourself, you will forget the music.
