An excellent question! When learning to play an instrument don't restrict yourself to the study of music. Rather treat it like a huge cultural voyage. All art from paintings to poetry to music and everything in between are connected in their ideas themes and style. To better understand Tchaikovsky one could read the works of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. To better perform Debussy one can understand the paintings of Monet and Cézanne. This will give you a better understanding of the artistic context of the music and perhaps give you new expressive ideas for the work. Culture is your domain explore it!
