Age / âge
How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
One does not simply choose to play the viola. During my senior year of high school, I was "voluntold" by my music teacher to lead the violin diaspora in repopulating the other, oft-neglected side of the orchestra after we lost just about every viola player.
What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I hope to specialize in Musical Acoustics in a research career—that is, to apply my scientific expertise to the realm of music-making. For example, I am interested in studying the physics of musical instruments and sound spaces, the mechanics of instrument technique (player-instrument interactions), as well as the psychoacoustical and mathematical principles behind music theory—with the aim of enhancing the the musical experience for both musician and audience.
What made you decide to pursue classical music?
As it is with physics, I am fascinated by complex structures that arise from simple entities. There is something grand about getting together with other people to immortalize an aspect of human existence within something quite beyond our individual selves, don't you think?
Metaphysical musings aside, I just enjoy (classical) music and I enjoy the time spent with friends.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
I'm not actually pursuing a career in music, per se. But in general, I believe the biggest challenge for any performer-entertainer is staying true to the art while appealing/marketing to a sustainable audience. Within classical music, the many hours spent inside the practice room—in search of the "ideal"—makes it even more difficult to keep track of reality (i.e. everything outside music).
How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
The comprehensive nature of the NYOC program—with individual instruction, chamber music collaboration and, or course, orchestral training—will give me a chance to observe how sounds from various sources combine to create "music." And then, the Tour will be no less than an exploration of different sonic environments. To cap it off, all of this will be under the tutelage of some of the best artists in this country to guide my musical intuition.
Do you write or arrange your own music?
Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Astronomy and physics, but I enjoy learning about anything in general—from linguistics to world history/politics.
Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Must I really pick one?
Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
That depends on my state of mind
What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
I Saw Her Standing There, by the Beatles
If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would most likely return to my research on the paleomagnetic field of Mars.
What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I specialized in astrophysics for my undergraduate degree.
What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Never give up on your dreams, no matter how difficult it gets. The journey will be very long and arduous, full of detours and disappointments. But when you finally reach it, you'll realize that every struggle was worth it.
Don't panic, and above all else, always know where your towel is.
