How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
Four and a half.

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
My mother believes that music should be something that ever child must learn, just like Math or Science. My mother also plays the cello and since a 4 year old can't really choose an instrument she chose for me.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I currently attend McGill university for music and I hope to become a professional musician. I love playing solo repertoire, but I especially enjoy ensembles and quartet music.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
Throughout high school I did well in many subjects, but I never enjoyed any of them enough to choose them as a career. I love playing the cello and I consider myself lucky to have found what I want to do for a living so early on in life.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
I face two large challenges in pursuit of music. One is finding the time, especially with all my studies at school, but I'm sure this is a common problem for all of my colleagues. Also, a large problem is money. Playing an instrument is expensive and so is going to university. On top of that I am the eldest of four children all of which play an instrument.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?

Do you write or arrange your own music?
I have written two small pieces for cello. So, not really.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
No

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I love being active. I used to be part of a track team, and soccer team, but I don't have much time for sports so I try to go to the gym every now and then.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
Matt Haimovitz

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Don't have one. Too many to count.

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Rite of Spring

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Ellie Goulding's cover of Your Song

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Working to get enough money for university. Also I would hopefully have some weddings gigs and other opportunities to play like that. Of course, I would also be practicing.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I've had a heart condition since I was around 7 years old. It's not life threatening (so far). The doctors kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me until I finally went to the hospital a bit over a year ago and was diagnosed with SVT.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Well technically I'm still a young artist who is just starting out. But if you are referring to someone just starting to play an instrument then I would tell them that it's not going to be easy and it's not something you can learn in a month. It's not always going to be fun and you're going to have to put in the hours. But once you get going you are going to have a blast and have the chance to experience amazing things like playing with the NYOC.
