How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
Having previously studied the violin for over a decade, I picked up the viola during my high school years in the Canterbury HS string program. It was then that the offers to play chamber started streaming in! I made the complete switch after performing Ravel's string quartet at the National Arts Centre's Young Artist Program in 2010 (repertoire that I have the good fortune to be performing again in the NYOC chamber program).
What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
Music has, and always will be, an integral part of my life. My current aspiration is to achieve a level of proficiency that will allow me to perform as a semi-professional musician in conjunction with another vocation --possibly in medicine, but I reserve the right to change my mind!
What made you decide to pursue classical music? / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi une formation en musique classique ?
I expressed an interest in taking music lessons as a child and was fortunate enough to have parents that encouraged those inclinations. While I was hardly prodigious in my early years, I really gravitated to music of all forms during my adolescence. It became an outlet for creativity, one that was very personal and charged with emotion. While I take pleasure in a number of artistic pursuits, I have found a solace in music that lets me explore myself and connect to others in a unique way. Classical music, in particular, appeals to my sensibilities because of the profundity inherent in much of the repertoire.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music? / Quel est le plus grand obstacle à surmonter afin de poursuivre une carrière en musique ?
The hours of practice! All joking aside, the biggest challenge I face is that of maintaining my own unique musical identity and artistry amidst a sea of incredibly talented peers. If I was to lose my sense of individuality, then I fear that I would no longer be invested in a pursuing a career in music.
How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada? / Comment pensez-vous que votre participation à NYO Canada puisse vous aider?
I look forward to making lasting friendships and fruitful relationships with all of my fellow orchestra members. The experience of participation in NYOC will be invaluable should I pursue a career as an orchestral musician; the atmosphere is that of a professional orchestra putting together a program and going on tour.
Do you write or arrange your own music? / Êtes-vous compositeur ou arrangeur de votre propre musique ?
I do indeed. If interested, please check out my youtube channel: "Heifetz101" for original music and covers.
Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I'm currently on a folk music binge- Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchells, and the like. I love to read and have occasionally tried my hand at writing: mostly poetry and songs. I enjoy playing soccer and have a penchant for strategy games suchas chess and Magic: The Gathering.
