How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
4

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
Both my mother and grandmother were violin teachers. I used to sit and watch while my mom would teach others. She took that as a show of interest and started teaching me. I've loved it ever since!

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
My immediate goal after school is to find work in an orchestra. I would also like to organize regular recitals and a yearly chamber music series with friends and colleagues.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I had heavy exposure to classical music thanks to my mom, and the passion for it grew inside me. I've had other interests come and go too, but music was the one that always stuck with me.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
A combination of bad economy and waning interest in younger demographics might make it more difficult to find work. It's hard enough for one to find the courage and determination to pursue a career in music without the financial woes.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
The 2008 tour with the NYOC was a great experience for me. You learn so much by being around so many people with great talent, and the coaches who come to teach us are top-notch professionals. I hope to learn just as much this summer.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
On occasion.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
I draw sometimes.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
Aside from music, I have interest in architecture and modern design, especially modern. I also like to read a lot, mostly fiction and science/astronomy books.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
James Ehnes

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Stephane Grappelli / Django Reinhardt (Quintette du Hot club de France)

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
Boo Boooz Blooooze (Nigel Kennedy)

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would be working through the summer while trying to find performance opportunities and auditions

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
My summer job involves computer programming! Needless to say, I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to go on tour with the NYOC instead.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Three words, patience, discipline, courage. Being a musician is hard work, so you need these things if you want to be successful, talent is just the icing on the cake. You especially need the discipline to practice six hours a day every day. You might not be able to practice every day, but if you have that discipline, you'll be able to make good use of the days you can practice. And never play through pain! I've seen many colleagues injure themselves due to overplaying and bad posture. If your body hurts, -stop- and figure out what you're doing wrong, or take a break.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
The performances. Nothing beats the energy of a good orchestral performance, except being a part of that performance. Everyone in NYOC brings lots of talent and passion for music, and it all comes down like a hammer during the concert. That is what i live for, entirely.
