How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
5 years old

Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I wanted to be just like my older sister who plays violin and I was tired of just singing along while she practiced.

What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
At this point I plan on studying both music and a science of some sort as a double-degree after high school but I may end up just studying music or just studying science. I don't really know where I'll end up. Either way I'll do my best to always keep up my playing whether as a career or as a hobby.

What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I grew up with it constantly around; my dad likes to play his favorite symphonies on the stereo at full blast so that it can be heard anywhere in the house. I wanted to be a part of it.

What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Inspiring younger generations to be interested in classical music and encouraging audiences to attend live concerts.

How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
I will be even more inspired and motivated and will acquire many chamber music and professional orchestral skills. There are very few opportunities to play chamber music in the Okanagan valley so I am very much looking forward to that.

Do you write or arrange your own music?
Occasionally I'll make up a melody but it never usually gets any further.

Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
Vocal jazz and chamber choir at school.

What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I love outdoors activities for example sailing biking hiking and camping on the west coast as well as taking pictures of it all. In the winter it would be cross-country skiing. I hope to go on a backpacking trip one day (preferably not too far in the future). Knitting sewing and crocheting are also fun.

Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
At the moment Vadim Repin

Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
Idina Menzel

What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Presently Brahms violin concerto

What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
The Magic Flute!

If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
I would probably have signed up for the Opera Kelowna Summer Program for Young Artists which just started this year and maybe I would have gone to a bible camp somewhere around the Okanagan. Otherwise I would have been riding my unicycle at a park swimming in the lake and doing puzzles.

What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I love to sing! I would love to have a career as an opera singer or in a musical on Broadway... but I have not considered it very seriously. Best stick to violin.

What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Make a proper schedule for a reasonable practice routine. When interpreting a piece always work from the score and take the interpretations of others no matter how famous with a grain of salt. "Tradition is another person's mistake". In order to convince others of the ideas in your performance you have to be convinced yourself.

For returning members: What is your fondest memory from a previous session and/or tour?
The first full orchestra rehearsal; the huge sound and the overwhelming energy in the room. I'm definitely looking forward to sharing such great music with such fine musicians and artists!
