Age / âge
How old were you when you started playing your instrument? / Quel âge aviez-vous quand vous avez commencé à jouer votre instrument ?
I was 13.
Why did you choose your instrument / Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cet instrument ?
I chose the bassoon because I liked the sound of the instrument - the deep, round, dark, warm timbre. I didn’t know that I would be getting into a virtual video game containing a total of 13 thumb keys.
What are your professional goals? / Décrivez quelques-unes de vos ambitions professionnelles.
I hope to be part of a high-calibre symphony orchestra as a professional bassoonist and develop and perform my solo repertoire. I would be open to recording, teaching, furthering my ability to play the contrabassoon, and learning to play period bassoons.
What made you decide to pursue classical music?
I really enjoyed watching Fantasia as a small child. I started playing recorder when I was eight, and received an alto saxophone as a tenth birthday gift. My love for music grew over the years (along with my instrumental collection) and pursuing classical music was the end result of a natural progression.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your pursuit of a career in music?
Winning a professional audition, as there are limited openings.
How do you feel you will benefit from participation in NYO Canada?
I feel that the demanding atmosphere and high standard of NYOC will motivate me to take initiative and collaborate with the orchestra members to overcome musical challenges. It will be good to work with and learn from the different instructors and orchestra members. I believe that at the end of the session I will come away improved in all aspects, including practice habits, reed-making, and doubling instruments.
Do you write or arrange your own music?
I have not done much of that recently, but I have composed and arranged, but I really enjoy transcribing
Do you participate in any other performing or creative arts?/ Êtes-vous artiste dans un autre milieu que la musique (théâtre, arts visuels, etc.) ?
No, not really. I find that music alone keeps me busy enough.
What are your interests outside classical music / Avez-vous d’autres intérêts à part la musique classique ?
I appreciate the details of grammar. I enjoy studying French and Spanish, and I am working toward being fluent in these two languages. I also like to keep a journal. I am working on perfecting my gastronomical masterpiece - French toast.
Who is your favourite classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (classique) préféré ?
There are so many of them to choose from, and I just take what I like from each one. I've enjoyed listening to Sergio Azzolini, Albrecht Mayer, and Sergei Nakariov.
Who is your favourite non-classical musician? / Quel est votre artiste (non classique) préféré ?
From my saxophone years, I enjoyed Gerry Mulligan's jazz bari sax playing
What is your favourite piece of music? / Quel est votre morceau préféré ?
Different pieces resonate with me, but one of my favourites is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6.
What has recently played on your Mp3? / Qu’écoutez-vous ces jours-ci sur votre Mp3?
I got one as a gift, but I've never used it.
If you weren't touring with NYO Canada what would you be doing with your summer?
Good question - practicing, making reeds, maybe helping out at my dad's chiropractic clinic ... and getting my driver's license.
What is there about you that you think people might be surprised to know?
I can beatbox to an extent - I just need to work on adding to my repertoire of sounds. I can also moonwalk.
What advice would you give young artists just starting out?
Take your practicing seriously, but make sure and have fun. When you sit down, know what you want to accomplish, and go for it. Never turn down an opportunity to audition or play in a competition just because you think that you aren’t "good enough" - you just might surprise yourself. Remember that not being accepted for the position doesn’t mean that the audition itself was a failure; the experience is valuable and will help you grow for the next audition. Easier said than done, I know.
